Swim and Dive Team participate at Clovis “Kick-Off” Invite on February 4
This is the second season for the Crush Swim and Dive team. Coach Mark Bennett was pleased with the day’s results and many new records were set. The athletes exhibited strength and determination. The overall team goal is to win the Central Valley Conference in the men’s and women’s categories.
Social Justice series speaker Dr. Amer F. Ahmed presents “Islam: Beyond the Myths, Breaking Down the Barriers”
Dr. Ahmed presented two sessions, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The afternoon session was standing-room only, and the evening session was full and provided a great forum for audience participation. Dr. Ahmed is an intercultural diversity educator who spoke about Islam and the dangers of Islamophobia.
Dr. Erendira Manriquez-Jones from Valley Children’s Hospital shares personal success story on February 22
Dr. Manriquez-Jones spoke to CCC students and AVID students from Clovis North High School. She graduated from La Salle University in Mexico City and completed her pediatric residency at Martin Luther King hospital in Los Angeles. Dr. Manriquez-Jones shared the challenges and struggles she overcame to realize her dream of becoming a doctor. It was a motivational session for all students, and they had the opportunity to ask several questions.
CTE vocational course off to a great start
The Food Safety Quality Course will prepare students to work in this faced-paced and growing industry. The class is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Herndon Campus. The course covers elements of a food safety control system; Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) training, laws and regulations; and guidelines governing agricultural commodities. The course has 31 total students, which includes apprentices from local food processing companies, such as Wawona Frozen Foods, Producers Milk, and Fig Garden Packing.
CCC Outreach Team reaches out to over 900 high school students at the African American Student Leadership Conference
The conference was held at the Fresno Convention Center on February 15. It was a great event for young leaders to learn about various higher educational opportunities, including how to apply for financial aid, meet with a counselor, and register for classes at CCC. There was even a surprise appearance by The Crush!
President Lori Bennett speaks to the SIR (Sons in Retirement) group on February 23
Dr. Bennett was excited to attend the monthly luncheon of the SIR group. There were over 80 attendees that learned about Clovis Community College.
CCC students attend the 10th Annual A2MEND Conference on March 2 and 3
The title of this year’s conference is “Building our Legacy: Education, Transformation, Liberation.” Four African American students attended, along with counselor Athena Gibbs. The conference was a great opportunity for the students to network with professionals, establish mentor/mentee relationships, listen to notable speakers, attend workshops, and attend a college fair (CSU, UC, HBCU).
Black History Month celebrated and recognized at CCC
A Place for All People is a historic poster exhibit celebrating the opening of the newest Smithsonian museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and is on display at CCC through April 3. A Place for All People is generously supported by the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of the Provost. Produced in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, this new poster exhibition explores African American history, culture, and community. The exhibition celebrates the historic opening of the newest Smithsonian museum on the National Mall. In addition, there is a wonderful selection of African American books on display in the library available for check-out.
CCC Faculty earn Online Teaching Certification
The course is taught by instructional designer Tracy Stuntz and distance education coordinator Teresa Ishigaki. The course was approximately eight weeks, and at the end, faculty submitted their course shell for certification to teach online at CCC. This is very exciting news as CCC continues to develop the distance education program. There are 18 faculty participating for this first round, which also includes adjunct faculty. There is a waitlist with over 30 faculty members that would like to earn the certification, and plans are being made to hold another certification over the summer.
CCC staff complete Kognito online training to help promote emotional wellness with students
Kognito uses role-play simulations to drive measurable changes in physical, emotional, and social health. This is a great tool so the nurse and student support staff can better help students dealing with various health issues.
Students, faculty, staff, and administrators participate at successful Strategic Planning Retreat:
There were 65 attendees at the retreat held at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Center on February 24, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Items discussed included:
- Tying data to the strategic plan
- Timeframe for completing the strategic plan
- Outcomes and upcoming action items
Group exercises included reviewing and discussing different data regarding CCC students and providing input on how the data will be used to develop the planning goals and activities for the next session. In addition, the College Council met before the retreat and approved the Educational Master Plan.
“Get Fit Clovis” comes to CCC for exhilarating workout
Health/PE instructor Becky Allen and Coach Orlando Ramirez led intense workouts for the “Get Fit Clovis” session, which took place in the dance studio and gym. Calories were burned and heart rates were up! “Get Fit Clovis” is a free exercise group open to the public, that meets every Saturday. Everyone “Crushed” the workout on February 25 at CCC.
