Strategic Plan update

Students, faculty, staff, and administrators have been working diligently on the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan. The first draft was submitted to College Council at their April 21 meeting and is now moving forward through constituent review. A College Council work-group met several times to review the plan. CCC hosted a college and community forum to solicit feedback.

Accreditation Self-Study update

The accreditation process continues at Clovis Community College. The college is reviewing the Self Evaluation Report, including the Quality Focus Essay. CCC sent a team to the ACCJC conference in April.

English professor Jeff Burdick receives prestigious recognition

On April 21, the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) honored Jeff Burdick with a resolution of commendation and thanks for his services including leadership on the Common Assessment Initiative, participation in the ASCCC Equity and Diversity Action Committee, and his service on the Board of Governors. Mr. Burdick also serves as the Chair of the Leon S. Peters Honors program.

CCC instructors present at the “On Course National Conference” in Anaheim and Ann Brandon earns special recognition

A group of faculty participated at the “On Course National Conference” April 21 and 22. Melanie Sanwo, Tiffany Sarkisian, and Nancy Vagim co-presented a 60-minute session entitled “Mission Responsible.” David Navarro, Patrick Stumpf, and Ann Brandon co-presented a 60-minute session entitled “The Roadway, Roadblocks, and Rigor of the College Matriculation Process.” Ann Brandon presented a 90-minute session entitled “Are You a HIP Instructor: Using High-Impact Practices to Foster a Learner-Centered Classroom.” In addition, Ann presented the On Course innovations that CCC has employed on its campus during the closing session. Ann Brandon was honored at this conference as the “On Course Ambassador of the Year” for 2016!

Athletics update - women’s swim and dive win the 2017 CVC conference championship

The Swim and Dive team “Crushed” it at the 2017 Central Valley Conference. History was made as the women’s Swim and Dive team won their first championship at the 2017 Central Valley Conference recently held in Merced April 20 through April 22. The men’s swim and dive team earned third place! Tanner Davis showcased his skills and speed and earned the title of Male Swimmer of the Year. In addition, Coach Mark Bennett earned Coach of the Year honors for both the men’s and women’s teams at this conference. Men’s soccer player Jesus Garnica was awarded a Special Recognition Award at the CCCAA 20th annual convention in Concord on March 29. Jesus earned a plaque and $100 scholarship. Only seven athletes from the entire state were presented with this prestigious award.

The men's soccer team is wrapping up the first spring season in program history. The focus of the off-season training is to improve technical ability, strength, and conditioning. The program also includes three matches against excellent competition. The team performed well against NCAA Division 2 competition Fresno Pacific, but lost the match by a score 2-1. The final spring exhibition matches included games against UC Merced and the Fresno Fuego. The spring season is a great opportunity to show our student-athletes the competition at the next level, and also allows them the opportunity to be seen and recruited by 4-year universities looking for transfer eligible athletes.

Congratulations to the student-athletes recognized at the 21st Annual Kiwanis 2016-2017 Torch of Excellence Scholar Athlete awards banquet on May 1. More details about the honorees coming in the June report.

Hundreds attend Spring Extravaganza on April 4

Nearly 100 vendors, clubs, and employers participated by having a booth to share information and resources with students. About 1500 attendees benefited from the event, including local high school students, the community, and CCC students. This annual event features information and resources about science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and criminology programs and careers. Delicious food was available from local food trucks.

CCC and Saint Agnes Medical Center Mini-Health Conference a huge success

A BIG thank you to CCC counselor Stefanie Adams and Saint Agnes Medical Center! Nearly 50 CCC Pre-Health students attended the Saint Agnes Medical Center Mini- Health Conference on March 31. Cathy Mayer, manager of volunteer services, did an amazing job setting up the conference. Ms. Nancy Hollingsworth, President and CEO of Saint Agnes Medical Center, provided a special welcome presentation. The CCC Pre-Health students received career advice, connected with others interested in the same career field, heard from the Central Valley’s top medical professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, and technicians, and received a tour of Saint Agnes Medical Center.

Communication Department holds outreach events and student competitions

On March 10, the “Third Annual Seminar for Communication Majors” was held. Students heard career path stories from recent graduates of the program, learned about transfer requirements to Fresno State, and networked with other Communication majors. On March 31, the "Sixth Intramural Negotiations Speech Tournament" was held. Nearly 55 students from various Communication classes took part in the activity in a battle to determine the best negotiator on campus. All students were amazing and did a great job and the fi rst place 2017 spring semester award went to Kyle Kingsland. “Interpapalooza” was held on April 20, which is a showcase exhibition of performances created and performed by students in the "Communication 12- Fundamentals of Interpretation" class. These students were selected by their instructor and peers to represent the class as the top performances of the semester. Save the date for Friday, May 5, for the annual"Speech Night."

STEM Update

Abstracts from chemistry student research groups were accepted for presentation at the American Chemical Society National meeting in San Francisco. Chemistry instructors Derek Dormedy, and Shawn Fleming, along with chemistry students traveled to San Francisco in April to present the posters at the national meeting. “Electronic Cigarette Solution and Vapor Analysis with GC-MS and LC-MS” was presented by Michael Lazernik, Preston Cole, and Martin Jones. “Analysis of Drinking Water Samples for Perfluorooctanoic Acid and 1,2,3,-Trichloropropane by LC-MS in the Clovis Metropolitan Area,” was presented by Brenna Flynn, Demi Fujino, Jaskiran Ghuman, Kyle Johnson, and Jameson Krauthammer.

Students and staff “Crushed the Stigma” at various events for Mental Health Awareness Week

Activities included an Information Faire booth with resources for students. They had the opportunity to learn more about the Active Minds Club and the Health and Psychological services offered at the college. The "Voices of Strength" event was a student panel where students shared personal stories and how they cope with mental illness. Retired California Highway Patrol Sergeant Kevin Briggs spoke about suicide prevention. Prior to retiring, he patrolled the southern end of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, a popular site for suicide attempts. All activities were co-sponsored by the Associated Student Government, Active Minds Club, Foundation for Community Colleges and the college Health and Psychological services office.

CCC showcases CTE programs at the San Joaquin Valley Manufacturing Alliance 2017 Summit on April 20

CCC joined forces with Fresno City College, Reedley College, and State Center Community College District to exhibit at this annual conference. The purpose of the conference is to connect valley manufacturers with government and educational leaders so they can work together to train and prepare the workforce for local manufacturing jobs. The CCC Outreach team shared information about various CCC CTE programs including the Food Safety Quality program and the Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate program.
