Get Tested for STIs - September 2023

For Health and Wellness

STIs are common. Many STIs don't cause any symptoms. You can have (and pass on) an STI without knowing it.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are spread predominantly by unprotected sexual contact including sexual activity involving your mouth, anus, vagina, or penis. The majority of STIs have no symptoms, but when symptoms are present, they commonly include abnormal vaginal discharge, urethral discharge, burning or itching of the genital area, genital bumps or ulcers, and lower abdominal pain. The health consequences of untreated STIs can be severe. If you are sexually active, one of the most important steps you can take to protect the health of you and your partner(s), is to get tested for STIs.

STD vs. STI - What’s the difference?

There is no difference other than Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) being an older name and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) being a newer name that is considered a more accurate term. STD and STI are used interchangeably.

What if I have an STI?

All STIs, even HIV, are treatable, and most are curable. Get tested. Get treated.

 TIPS for lowering your risk

The most reliable way to avoid STIs is to not have vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

If you are sexually active, here are ways you can decrease your risk:

  • Use condoms consistently during vaginal, oral, or anal sex.
  • Choose your sex partners carefully.
  • Limit your number of sexual partners.
  • Get tested regularly.
  • Get vaccinated for Hepatitis B & HPV.
  • Avoid using unregulated tattoo and/or piercing shops.
  • Avoid sharing needles.
  • If you have an STI, get treatment at the same time as your partner(s) to avoid re-infection.
