Potential embedded tutors must be hired as in-center tutors for the Tutorial Center before they are placed in the classroom as embedded tutors. This allows them to be trained in peer tutoring theory and practices before they begin their embedded-specific training. If you are interested in requesting an embedded tutor for the upcoming semester, please email adelaide.mitchell@cloviscollege.edu or stacy.ross@cloviscollege.edu for information and the link to request.
If you would like a particular student to be your embedded tutor, please have the student complete the online application form on the Tutorial Center website to be considered. Please keep in mind that we typically interview in October/November for the Spring semester and in April/May for the Fall semester.
Because our tutors are currently taking their own classes, we coordinators must wait until all tutor availability has been submitted and the in-center schedule has been created before we can assign embedded tutors. This process means that embedded tutors are placed right before a term begins (typically 1-4 days before the first day of class). If we are unable to place a tutor in your classroom, you will hear within the first few days of the semester.
We have an embedded tutoring agreement that outlines the expectations and responsibilities of each party that is reviewed, discussed, and signed in the first week of the term. Here is a brief overview of the responsibilities of an instructor with an embedded tutor:
- Grant the tutor a “Tutor” role on Canvas and designate an area on Canvas for the tutor to be present and engage with the students. Most instructors let the tutors create a module or page
- Provide the tutor with a copy of your syllabus and other necessary documents (via Canvas is fine)
- Provide the tutor with clear expectations as they approach their role
- Integrate the embedded tutor into your class in order to best contribute to your students’ learning
- Recommend the Tutorial Center to your students, keeping them apprised of the services and events that will benefit them
- Set up a method of regular communication with your tutor (email exchanges and office hours visits are popular options)
- Provide the tutor with feedback so he or she will be able to adjust their tutoring accordingly
This course includes the support of an embedded tutor who works closely with me as additional support in your learning experience. The tutor will not have access to grades, nor will they be able to assign grades, but they will be able to assist you with course material and skills. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the tutor and their availability in the Tutorial Center.
Yes, we can embed tutors into online classes, both asynchronous or hybrid. The tutors can help post announcements, submit example responses, or create videos in support of the course material. Though tutors can be helpful online, we do give priority to in-person requests because of the greater impact embedded tutors have in the physical classroom.
The Tutorial Center coordinators who oversee embedded tutoring have been certified as Supplemental Instruction Supervisors via the University of Missouri Kansas City. Embedded tutors are provided training centered around collaborative learning & facilitation strategies. When an embedded tutor is placed in a class, they are given a training handbook (written by coordinators and former embedded tutors) that contain best practices in multiple embedded tutoring scenarios.
Embedded training meetings recur throughout the semester.
During their first semester, the embedded tutor will be observed by a coordinator. After the first semester, the coordinators use a survey called “Mid-point Check In” in which you, the instructor, provide feedback on how it is going with your embedded tutor. If the mid-point check-in is positive, no observation is needed. If the mid-point check-in is negative, tutors will receive further observation and evaluation. Embedded tutors are also evaluated regularly while working in the Tutorial Center.
Students are able to provide anonymous feedback close to the end of the term when the coordinators distribute the survey form. A coordinator will come into your classroom and complete the observation in typically 10 minutes or less.
The Tutorial Center has an open-door policy for instructors to come and ask questions about embedded tutoring of the coordinators.
