Hydration - May 2024

To perform your best both mentally and physically, stay well hydrated!

Every cell, tissue and organ in your body benefits from good hydration, especially your brain! Even mild dehydration can impair your energy level, mood, memory, attention span, focus, and cognitive functioning.

How much water do you need each day?

Daily water intake needs vary greatly based on age, sex, activity level, weather, climate, health status, medical conditions, etc., but a general rule of thumb is to try and drink 8 cups (64 oz) of water a day. You need to be aware of your body and drink more water if you feel thirsty, have dry mouth, or are urinating less frequently. Another good idea is to establish the habit of monitoring the color of your urine and drinking more water when your urine is darker in color.

IMPORTANT: Monitor the color of the urine leaving your body, not the color of the urine diluted in the toilet bowl. If the urine in the toilet bowl is dark, you definitely need to drink more water! Also, be aware that certain medications and foods can change the color of urine.
